All fictional submission guidelines are already updated on The Lark’s Write for Us page below:

Fiction short stories

Fictional short stories in most genres are accepted. Up to 5000 words per fictional short story/post and no less than 1000 words accepted. If your short story is more than 5000 words in one post then it will be considered if it is no more than 6000 but after that, you will be asked to make it into serial fiction posts.

All fiction must have a plot and a good storyline. We will not accept very short fiction under 1000 words unless it is Flash fiction. Please use show not tell when writing fiction (see example below).

Plays — screenplays and radio plays

We also now accept plays, screenplays, and radio plays from five pages and up which is 1000 words per page. You can also post 90 pages split into five pages which is 5000 words per post as a series of posts.

Flash fiction

Flash fiction is allowed from 300 words and up and no more than 700 words.

Short-form poetic stories

100-word stories are not allowed but there is one exception. If the piece of writing is written similar to poetry or it sounds like poetry in any way, then it will be published. It must be a poetic short fictional story.

True stories

True stories are accepted using the tag ‘stories’ in the tag system along with using ‘The Lark’ as a tag. The truth will be written like a short story of at least 800 words or more and no more than 3000 words. This means it must read like a short story just as you write fiction and not an article. The difference is it will be a true story. So, add some dialogue to it to make it believable. The true story must not sound like an article, so using dialogue is a must. At least, three sentences of dialogue will make it seem like fiction in a true story. Please show the story not tell it which is a must. If you are not sure what this means then read more about creative writing in regards to showing not telling your story. Here are examples:

Serial fiction

Serial fiction accepted of up to 150,000 words where a chapter of a short book will be posted to The Lark as a series of submissions one after the other as a continuation of the story which is serial fiction. Please submit no less than 1000 to 3000 words for each chapter/post. If you have written short serial fiction or short storybooks like romance, sci-fi, horror, thrillers, fantasy, etc., The Lark will accept them. Even a biography/memoir written with dialogue will be accepted. Please use show not tell when writing fiction (see the above example).

Rules of writing

We do not accept erotica or explicit content of any kind. This means sexual words (if the story has a plot or has a substantial storyline we will accept it but please consider changing erotic words). Explicit sexual scenes are not allowed or if it damages the good reputation of someone; slanderous or libelous wording is forbidden on The Lark Publication.

Thank you for reading and we look forward to your submissions.
